Koichi Itagaki has discovered a supernova in M101.

IAU Designation: SN 2023ixf
Coordinates (J2000): RA = 14:03:38.580 DEC = +54:18:42.10
Discovery date: 2023-05-19 17:27:15.000 (JD=2460084.2272569)

Spectroscopy indicates it is a type II SN at a very early phase, and that at "a distance of only ~6.4 Mpc, this would represent among the closest core-collapse supernovae found in the past several decades".

The Transient Name Server for SN 2023ixf shows...

TNS spectra looks real, reported magnitudes range from 14.9 to 15.9 depending on filter.  What OTA are you using?   What is your approximate magnitude limit in your 30s exposures.  Too many clouds, for too many weeks, here in central VA to follow up... maybe tomorrow night.

Images of M101 from 05/13

Hi,

I have an image set (5x120s) from 05/13. It does not look like it was there on the 13th.

Telescope: Celestron RASA f/2 203mm

Camera: ZWO ASI 183MC

Filter: IR Cut

SN 2023ixf Photo

I took a photo from Seattle on 2023-05-18.5 (average)

About 60 exposures @ 120sec

RedCat 51, 250mm focal length, 51mm aperture.

ZWO ASI585MC Camera

I have my stacked and processed photo, but have NO IDEA how to upload this to the AAVSO portal to help with this study. Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

SN 2023ixf photos

I also captured images of M101 during the night of the SN. Mine were taken in Ninigret Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island, 2023-05-19 around 1AM.

About 64 exposures @ 180sec

Z61, 360mm FL, 61mm aperture
Canon EOS 200D

I also have a stacked and processed photo but am unaware of how to submit my data to AAVSO to aid with the study of this event.
