Mr Eggen has some dyslexic issues with catalog names etc, like all of us from time to time.

I have verified that either two alphas or two numbers are reversed when looking at the SIMBAD cross reference for the main HD star.

The question is; is this an acceptable practice or if he did not write it correctly to start with, I (we) should not try to corect it?

You want to get the correct star linked to the card. There is usually a couple pieces of information (alias, magnitude, coordinates) so you can let majority rule over the misspelt card. If you do link the incorrect star because it was Eggen's notation then include a comment that it looks wrong.

I have verified these items many ways so I am confident that what I enter is correct and Eggen's notations were just reversed.

I will continue to excersize caution while doing this.
