Hello, fellow spectroscopists,
When searching on the AVSpec page, I noticed that the following stars result in a "Star not recognized” error message when I query them in https://app.aavso.org/avspec/search:
37 Eri
37 Lib
4 Sgr
7 Psc
83 Vir
chi Cap
eps Aqr
eps CMa
eta Boo
HD 107328
HD 140283
HR 220
HR 4125
HR 4451
HR 6066
HR 6449
J Pup
ksi01 Sgr
ksi02 CMa
tet Vir
Why is it so?

The AAVSO database…
Hi Ari,
The AAVSO database is only for variable stars (ie those which vary in brightness) catalogued in VSX
https://www.aavso.org/vsx/index.php?view=search.top
Not sure how stars which may only be spectroscopically variable are handled though (eg eta Boo is a spectroscopic binary)
You could try the BAA database which includes all objects but unless the stars are interesting for some reason there will probably not be any spectra there
I see some of these, eg eta Boo have spectra in the ELODIE archive though
Cheers
Robin
Hi, Robin,
Actually, I was searching in the wrong place: instead of looking for information on these stars in an external database, I was using the search feature within AVSpec. Because most of the “standard AVSpec stars” are non-variables, the search results were telling me those stars are not recognized. These "standard AVSpec stars" are to be used in the initial procedure for a newcomer to submit observations to the AVSpec database (https://app.aavso.org/avspec/help).
Your suggestion for me to search in the BAA database will be followed, thank you. And in the ELODIE archive too.
Thank you.
Cheers,
Ari
