AAVSO Alert Notice 664 announces an observing campaign on the recurrent nova U Sco in anticipation of its outburst predicted for any time between now and about a year from now. Please see the notice for details and observing instructions.
Many thanks, and Good observing,
Elizabeth O. Waagen, AAVSO HQ
Dr. Brad Schaefer informed us that he has cancelled the watch on U Sco. Analysis of data, including particularly critical data obtained by Gordon Myers, indicates that the outburst of U Sco almost certainly occurred while the system was in its seasonal gap, likely in 2017. Because the outburst is so short in duration, the entire event could easily have fit into the gap. Changes in the O-C diagram are key evidence that the outburst has likely occurred. He also reports that he is currently writing a paper on U Sco that makes use of the AAVSO from 2010 on.
Dr. Schaefer extends sincere thanks to all the observers who have monitored U Sco with such dedication!
Many thanks also from HQ, and Good observing,
Elizabeth
