Spectra: Spectroscopy obtained by J. Strader et al. (ATel #13112) on 2019 Sep. 16.01 UT using the Goodman Spectrograph on the SOAR telescope confirms that the object is a substantially reddened classical nova. They report that ASAS-SN imaging indicates the nova is still brightening.
Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, PEP, spectroscopy) and multiple bands as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as the nova evolves.

b. P. Schmeer (Saarbruecken-Bischmisheim, Germany) reports that the two Gaia sources that are closest to Itagaki's improved position (17 37 09.53 -35 10 23.4) are both 5" away (g magnitudes 20.5 and 20.6). The Vista variable VVV J173709.36-351023.01 is 2.1" to the west of the nova. No previous eruptions (or outbursts) were recorded by the ASAS-SN Sky Patrol since 2012 March 31/2016 March 9.
