AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 225 (July 31,1996)

0241-08 SUPERNOVA 1996an IN NGC 1084

We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU Circular 6442) that S.
Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the CCD discovery of a supernova in NGC 1084 on July 27.772 UT at
magnitude 14 by Masakatsu Aoki, Tsukioka-Cho, Toyama, Japan.

SN 1084 is 15" east and 22" north of the center of NGC 1084. The supernova's 2000 position, measured
by Y. Kushida, Yatsugatake South Base Observatory, is (IAU Circular 6442):

R.A. = 02h 46m 00.83s Decl. = -07d 34' 20.3"

Inspection by S. Benetti, M. Turatto, and G. van de Steene, European Southern Observatory (ESO), of a
fully-reduced CCD spectrum taken July 30.41 UT with the ESO 1.5-m telescope at La Silla, Chile,
confirms the object as a type-II supernova approximately two months after explosion (IAU Circular 6442).

Accompanying is a chart from the AAVSO Variable Star Atlas showing the location of NGC 1084, and a
chart of the galaxy and the supernova from the Deep Space CCD Atlas: South by Vickers and Wassilieff.
Magnitudes on this chart are taken from the Guide Star Catalog, using The Sky software. Please monitor
SN 1084 and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters.

Congratulations to Masakatsu Aoki on his discovery!

0207-63 WX HYDRI TO BE OBSERVED WITH HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

Astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute are planning to observe the SU UMa-type
cataclysmic variable WX Hyi with the Hubble Space Telescope in August, September, and November.
They have requested our assistance in monitoring its behavior throughout this period.

Our southern hemisphere observers, in particular, are asked please to monitor WX Hyi closely from now
through the end of the year, and to keep us informed of its behavior, so we may alert the astronomers
accordingly. If you do not have the charts for this far-southern object, please let us know.

CHARTS AVAILABLE ON AAVSO FTP SITE AND AAVSO WEB SITE HOME PAGE

Chart links are obsolete; 11/2013 create charts using VSP at http://www.aavso.org/vsp

Electronic copies of the SN 1084 charts mentioned in this Alert Notice are available from our FTP site:

ftp.aavso.org (198.116.78.2), in /pub/alert225

The charts have also been placed on our Web site at the following address:

The answering machine at AAVSO Headquarters is on nights and weekends for your convenience.
Please call our charge-free number (500-642-3883) to report your observations. If you are cut off when
you telephone in your observations, please wait a few minutes and call back to complete your call. We
have learned that if someone calls to leave observations on the answering machine and while they are
speaking someone else calls, the first person may be cut off. We also encourage observers to send
observations by fax to 617-354-0665 or by e-mail through the Internet to observations@aavso.org. We
would appreciate it very much if you would report your observations in Universal Time.

Many thanks for your valuable astronomical contributions and your efforts.
Good observing!

Janet A. Mattei
Director
