Checking for duplicate AAVSONet proposals

Hi all

I finally got round to watching Ken Menzies and George Silvis webinar on the BSM network recently. It inspired me to use this amazing resource and I'd really like to create a proposal or 2. Before I do that I was wondering if there's a list of current approved proposals (or target objects) so that I can check I'm not wasting people's time submitting a proposal that duplicates what is already being monitored?

Thanks,

AAVSOnet targets

Hi Guy,

Good news that you are thinking of submitting a proposal or two!  The proposal web page

https://app.aavso.org/aavsonet/

has both proposals and a link to a list of targets.  That said, I may have more permissions than you do, and you may not be able to see all 230 proposals, and the target link might be missing.  In addition, I think the target list includes the background "survey" targets that are not part of any formal proposal  (basically, the background survey targets are every variable brighter than 8th magnitude).  If you don't see what you need there, just let me know what you want to observe and I'll check it for you.

Arne,

Arne,

That link only show me the results of proposals that I made, not anyone elses.

I can get to all proposals one at a time by going to my last proposal, https://app.aavso.org/aavsonet/proposal/216/

and decrementing or incrementing the final 3 digit number one at a time. But that's pretty tedious!

Looking at AAVSOnet proposals

The behavior that you describe doesn't sound very useful at all!

Anyone should be able to view existing, accepted proposals.

I'll take a look at the web code and push for a change.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

When I go to https://app.aavso.org/aavsonet/ it's empty for me. I'll look forward to the modified version that will show all proposals, but will try my luck with a proposal in the meantime.

Guy,

In the last year I've submitted 10 proposals and had 9 accepted. The only rejection was due to having someone else already observing the star, and in that case I was advised to contact the person already observing it tp get images if I wished.

Most of my proposals resulted in a little "give and take" with mgmt to hone in on what I really needed. Very quick and constructive!

Thanks for your helpful response. One area I'm interested in is novae. I note from the proposal guide that

1) New novae are typically put on an AAVSOnet telescope as quickly as possible, so there is no need to propose to observe them.

If this is the case is the process to create a proposal to get access to the data if it's already being captured?

I have been submitting obs from one of the Slooh robotic scopes for N Vul 2021 (V0606 Vul) which is showing some interesting behaviour with multiple brightenings. I would like to use the AAVSOnet data as well (especially as the Slooh scope is awaiting repair at the moment).

nova fields

Hi Guy,

I have been lax in obtaining photometry for every new nova with AAVSOnet, but there are a couple of recent ones that have been monitored.  V1405 Cas (Nova Cas 2021) and V1674 Her (Nova Her 2021) come to mind.  I think a proposal requesting monitoring of all recent novae (present and future) would be an acceptable research project.  You can also submit a smaller proposal for now to obtain and measure the V1405 Cas and V1674 Her datasets.
