Event: Nova in Musca: N Mus 2022 (= ASASSN-22hw = AT 2022mmp) [V415 Mus]
Discovered by: All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) (reported by K. Z. Stanek, for the ASAS-SN team)
Discovery magnitude: 9.5 g Sloan
Discovery date: 2022 Jun 10.13 UT
Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 13 24 31.30 Decl. -72 10 30.3 (from VSX page for N Mus 2022)
Spectra: Spectroscopy indicating the object to be a nova was obtained on 2022 June 11.4230 UT by Hamish Barker (Nelson, New Zealand). Barker's spectrum was taken with a 200-mm Newtonian and L200 Littrow spectrograph with 180lpmm grating.
Observing recommendations: Please observe N Mus 2022 as it continues to evolve, with observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, PEP, spectroscopy) and multiple bands as instrumentation permits. Dr. Frederick Walter (Stony Brook University) suggests that since the nova is past peak, frequency of observation depends on the rate of decline, but should be a minimum of one observation per night per band. For spectroscopy, he recommends spectra in blue to observe He II 4686, H-beta, and the Bowen blend (4640A), in addition to H-alpha. Cadence for spectra depends on how fast the nova evolves, but, he adds, "you can't go wrong with a spectrum every clear night."
