Event: Nova in Cassiopeia: N Cas 2020 = TCP J00114297+6611190  [V1391 Cas]

Discovered by: Stanislav Korotkiy (Ka-Dar Obs./Astrovert, Kuz'minskoye, Russian Fed.) and Kirill Sokolovsky (MSU/SAI MSU/ASC Lebedev) (via ATel #13903)

Discovery magnitude: unfiltered magnitude 12.9 (V zero-point) (using a 135-mm f/2.0 telephoto lens + SBIG ST-8300M CCD camera as part of the NMW survey)

Discovery date: 2020 July 27.9302 UT

Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 00 11 42.96   Decl. +66 11 20.8   (from VSX page for N Cas 2020)

Spectra: K. Sokolvsky et al. (ATel #13903) report that spectroscopy obtained on 2020 Jul. 29.025 UT with the Sternberg Astronomical Institute telescope show the object to be an FeII type classical nova near optical peak.

A spectrum obtained by U. Munari et al. (ATel #13905) on 2020 Jul. 29.960 UT with the Asiago 1.22-m telescope shows significant changes from the one by Sokolovsky et al. 23 hours earlier and demonstrates significant interstellar extinction.

S. Shore et al. (ATel #13939) report that ongoing monitoring of the nova through 2020 Aug. 11.9 UT shows very substantial evolution of the spectrum since their first observations on Jul. 30.7 UT.

Observing recommendations: An AAVSO Alert Notice was not issued for this object at the time of discovery. However, the nova has continued to brighten and is being studied by the astronomical community, and ongoing optical coverage will be valuable. Please observe the nova as it continues to evolve, with observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, spectroscopy) and multiple bands as instrumentation permits.
