Alert Notice 653: Nova in Norma: N Nor 2018 = PNV J16143400-5330050

October 26, 2018

Event: Nova in Norma - N Nor 2018 = PNV J16143400-5330050

Discovered by: Robert Kaufman (Bright, Victoria, Australia)

Discovery magnitude: 10.5 (DSLR green channel, approximately visual band)

Discovery date: 2018 October 13.414 UT

Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 16 14 32.91    Decl. -53 30 15.2   (from VSX)

Spectra: Spectroscopy obtained by E. Aydi et al. (ATel #12142) on 2018 Oct. 23.03 UT using the Goodman spectrograph on the SOAR telescope indicates that N Nor 2018 is a classical Fe II nova, possibly in the transition phase.

S. Kiyota (Kamagaya, Japan, via CBET 4568) reports that a low-resolution spectrogram obtained 2018 Oct. 15.382 UT showed strong H-alpha emission.

Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, PEP, spectroscopy) and multiple bands as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as the nova evolves.
