AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 282 (May 18, 2001)
1902+11 NOVA AQUILAE 2001 (= TAV J1907+117)
We have been informed by Guy Hurst, Basingstoke, England (The Astronomer
Electronic Circulars 1633 and 1634), and by the Central Bureau for
Astronomical Telegrams (IAU Circular 7627) that Mike Collins, Everton,
Bedfordshire, England, discovered a nova in Aquila at photographic magnitude
10.9 on images taken May 11.988 UT using a 135-mm telephoto lens and Kodak
2415 film while participating in the U.K. Nova/Supernova Patrol. Nothing was
seen at the location of the nova down to photographic magnitude 12.8 on an
image taken by Collins on 2000 November 26.8 UT, or on a Patrol master image
taken on 1997 August 25.9 UT down to magnitude 13. A Patrol image taken
2001 April 25.1 UT may show the object near magnitude 12.1, but identification
is uncertain due to field crowding.
The nova was confirmed at CCD(V) magnitude 12.6 (GSC system) by N. D. James,
Chelmsford, England, who obtained an image on May 16.966 UT with a 0.30-m
reflector. James reported the location of N Aql 01 as:
R.A. = 19h 07m 28.41s Decl. = +11 degrees 44' 45.8" (2000)
Hurst received preliminary information from observers at Isaac Newton Group
of Telescopes, La Palma, who obtained spectra with the 4.2-m William Herschel
Telescope that indicate the object appears to be a nova.
M. Reszelski, Szamotuly, Poland, reported to the AAVSO that he observed
N Aql 01 at visual magnitude 12.7 on May 17.8900 UT.
Accompanying is an AAVSO Preliminary 'd' scale chart prepared by G. Hawkins
and K. Malatesta, AAVSO Headquarters, and showing the location of N Aql 01.
Please use this chart to observe the nova, and report your observations of
1902+11 N AQL 01 to AAVSO Headquarters, making sure to indicate which
comparison star(s) you used. An AAVSO chart with a fainter sequence will be
forthcoming. N Aql 01 is located close to the location of 1903+12 V1493 Aql
(N Aql 1999 No. 1) (see AAVSO Alert Notice 261) and has been marked on the
AAVSO Preliminary 'c' scale chart for this star; a 'd' scale Preliminary
chart also exists for V1493 Aql.

2248-14 IL AQUARII = GLIESE 876 - NOTE
We have been informed by Brian Skiff, Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ,
that Gliese 876 (see AAVSO Alert Notice 281) has a large proper motion, about
1.2" per year toward pa125. As a result, the position that was given in
Alert Notice 281 is slightly incorrect. Skiff gives the 2000 position of
Gliese 876 as:
R.A. = 22h 53m 16.7s Decl. = -14 degrees 15' 49" (2000)
