AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 271 (February 10, 2000)
1749-19 N? SGR 00 - POSSIBLE NOVA IN SAGITTARIUS
We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU
Circular 7362), that Syuichi Nakano reports that Yukio Sakurai, Otsuka-Cho,
Mito, Japan, discovered a possible nova in Sagittarius at photographic
magnitude 10.5 on films taken on February 4.8627 and 4.8631 UT, using Fuji
Color Super G400 film and a 300-mm lens at f/2.8. The star was visible at
magnitude 11.5 on film taken on January 25.863. Film taken on Jan. 20 showed
nothing to magnitude 10.8, and patrol films taken since 1991 show nothing at
the position.
Inspection of the Digital Sky Survey shows nothing at the location of the
object.
Yoshio and Reiki Kushida, Yatsugatake South Base Observatory, Japan, imaged
the object on Feb. 6.8125 UT using a 0.40-m f/6.0 Newtonian reflector + CCD
and obtained a CCDV magnitude of 10.4. Yoshio measured the position of the
object as:
R.A. = 17h 55m 09.84s Decl. = -19 degrees 46' 01.0" (epoch 2000)
Accompanying is the CCDV image obtained by the Kushidas on Feb. 6.8125 UT
showing the suspected nova.
Also accompanying is an AAVSO "b" scale preliminary chart prepared by C. Scovil
showing the location of the object. Please use this chart to observe
1749-19 N? SGR 00, and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters,
indicating which comparison stars you used.
Congratulations to Yukio Sakurai on his latest discovery!
REQUEST TO MONITOR 0549-03 UX ORI, 0532-06B BF ORI, AND 0533+26 RR TAU
Astronomers at the University of Washington will be making high-resolution
spectra observations of the T Tauri/Herbig AeBe type nebular variable stars
UX Ori, BF Ori, and RR Tau between February 15 and 21. They have requested
our assistance in monitoring these stars throughout the observing run in order
to provide good optical coverage, which will be very important in correlating
their spectra. Please note that this request for observations also appeared
in AAVSO News Flash No. 569.
Please monitor UX Ori, BF Ori, and RR Tau closely - every clear night and
several times per night - from now until the end of February, recording the
time to four decimal places, or nearest few seconds.
Accompanying are the following AAVSO "d" scale charts: Preliminary chart for
0532-06B BF Ori; Standard chart for 0533+26 RR Tau; Standard chart for 0501-04
AQ Eri on which 0459-03 UX Ori is shown. A "c" scale chart for RR Tau is also
available on our website or from Headquarters on request. Please use these
charts to monitor UX Ori, BF Ori, and RR Tau, and report your observations to
AAVSO Headquarters, giving the time to four decimal places of the Julian Date.
Be sure to indicate which comparison stars you used.
1058+45 AN URSAE MAJORIS TO BE OBSERVED WITH EUVE SATELLITE
As announced in AAVSO Alert Notice 266, colleagues at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory will be observing the AM Her-type x-ray magnetic variable
AN UMa with the EUVE satellite. Observations will take place between February
9 and 23. Our assistance has been requested in obtaining good optical coverage
of this star during the observing run and over the coming month. Please note
that this request for observations also appeared in AAVSO News Flash No. 572.
AAVSO "d" and "e" scale standard charts for AN UMa are available on the AAVSO
web and FTP sites (see below). If you need paper copies of these charts,
please let us know.
CHARTS AVAILABLE ON AAVSO WEB AND FTP SITES

The answering machine at AAVSO Headquarters is on nights and weekends for
your convenience. Please call our charge-free number (888-802-STAR =
888-802-7827) to report your observations. We also encourage observers to
send observations by fax to 617-354-0665 or by e-mail through the Internet
to observations@aavso.org.
Many thanks for your valuable astronomical contributions and your efforts.
Good observing!
