AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 265 (December 2, 1999)

1918+04 NOVA AQUILAE 1999 NUMBER 2 = V1494 AQL

In AAVSO Alert Notice 264, an observation of N Aql 99#2 (= V1494 Aql per IAU
Circular 7324
) at visual magnitude 5.6 made on Dec 1.958 UT by Gary Nowak of
Essex Junction, VT, was reported. This observation was in fact an independent
discovery of the nova.  Gary, a longtime AAVSO member, observer, and nova
searcher, discovered V1494 Aql in the course of his nova patrol on December
1, 1999, using 7 x 35 binoculars.

We extend our sincere apologies to Gary for not reporting his observation
as an independent discovery, and we congratulate him for his discovery!

Spectroscopic confirmation of V1494 Aql as a nova was reported by M. Fujii,
Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan, and by K. Ayani, Bisei Astronomical Observatory
(IAU Circular 7324).

W. Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, reported that V1494 Aql was not visible down
to magnitude 10.5 on an image taken on Nov. 25.035 UT (IAU Circular 7324).
