AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 260 (June 30, 1999)

0014-06 SUPERNOVA 1999cw IN MCG -01-02-001  (PGC 1288)

We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU
Circular 7211
) that R. Johnson and W. D. Li, University of California at
Berkeley, on behalf of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search, report the
discovery of a bright supernova in MCG -01-02-001 (PGC 1288) on June 28.5 UT
at CCD magnitude about 14.2, using the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging
Telescope.  A second image taken June 29.5 UT also showed the supernova at
about 14.2.  They also report that an image taken of the same field on August
15.5, 1998, shows nothing at the position of the supernova down to CCD
magnitude 19.0.

SN 1999cw, which is offset 21.1" east and 1.5" south of the nucleus of
MCG -01-02-001, is located at:

          R.A. = 00h 20m 01.46s     Decl. = -06o 20' 03.6"      (2000)

Accompanying is an AAVSO "e" scale preliminary chart prepared by C. Scovil.
Please use this chart to observe the supernova, and report your observations
of 0014-06 SN 1999cw to AAVSO Headquarters, being sure to indicate which
comparison stars you used to make your observations.

Congratulations to the Lick Observatory Supernova Search team on their
discovery!
