AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 185 (May 24, 1994)
1824-17 NOVA SAGITTARII 1994 NUMBER 2 [V4362 SGR]
We have been informed by Kenji Hirosawa and by the Central Bureau for Astronomical
Telegrams (IAU Circular 5993) of the photographic discovery of a nova by Yukio Sakurai,
Mito, Ibaragi, Japan, on May 20.710 UT at magnitude 10.8. No image was visible down to
11.5 on a photo taken by Sakurai on May 16.733 UT.
The 1950 position of N Sgr 94#2 is
R.A. = 18h 27m 28s Dec. = -17deg 14.2'
Visual confirmation was obtained by S. Takahashi, Shiga, Japan, on May 22.603 at
magnitude 11.4, and by M. Watanabe, Toyama, Japan, on May 22.620 at 11.6. Other visual
observations include May 24.297 UT, 11.8, by C. Scovil, Stamford, CT.
Optical spectrograms obtained by S. J. Austin, G. Schwarz, and S. Starrfield, Arizona State
University, and R. M. Wagner, Ohio State University, on May 23.3 UT with the Perkins
1.8-m telescope (+ CCD spectrograph) confirmed the object "as a nova with an early post-
maximum 'Fe II class' spectrum" (IAU Circular 5993).

Accompanying is an AAVSO "d" scale chart of SS Sgr, which is close to N Sgr 94#2 and
which shows its position. Please use this chart to observe the nova, and report your
observations to AAVSO Headquarters, using the charge-free number (800-642-3883). Be
sure to indicate which comparison stars you used. The answering machine at AAVSO
Headquarters in on nights and weekends for your convenience.
Congratulations to Yukio Sakurai on the discovery of N Sgr 94#2!
Thank you very much for your valuable astronomical contributions.
Good observing!
